The LChange workshop targets all aspects of computational modeling of language change, historical as well as synchronic change. It is running in its fifth iteration and will be co-located with ACL 2024 in Bangkok (Thailand), as a hybrid event. The workshop will take place on Thursday 15 August 2024. A year after the surge of the discursive moment surrounding ChatGPT 3, followed by versions 3.5 and 4 and other generative AI’s systems, this call invites collaborators for an interdisciplinary chapter proposal on Generative AI and discourse from various angles for a book project to be submitted to Palgrave in 2024.
Researchers are invited to submit an article proposal of 1,000 words, clearly situating the objective, the problem, and the methodology of their project, to bkaramif@uottawa.ca & valentac@yorku.ca, by February 18, 2024.

The festive season is a time of storytelling, sharing experiences, and building connections – all elements at the heart of discourse linguistics 🙂 This year, we have looked into fervent negotiations of expertise, examined moral judgements in the health domain, dissected controversial discourses and smirked as our colleagues confronted the limitations of talking to cat robots. Time to celebrate the power of words to create understanding!

Waseda University, Tokyo, is becoming a hub for exploring the intersection of NLP and humanities research from December 1-3, emphasizing Uralic languages and wider linguistic variety, as it hosts the 3rd International Conference on Natural Language Processing for Digital Humanities and the 8th International Workshop on Computational Linguistics for Uralic Languages. The collaboration promises to open new research and practical avenues, especially in under-researched languages, thus contributing, among others, to minority language preservation and development.
How to unearth emotions from Ancient Roman inscriptions? Which searchable Mordvin language corpora are out there? How to integrate ChatGPT in research and teaching? The 8th DiscourseNet Winter School invites students and researchers to an interdisciplinary exchange at University of Valencia, Spain, from Tuesday 16 until Friday 19 January 2024.
In its 8th edition, the Winter School takes a look at the structuring conditions of doing research within global power relations. It aims to deepen its participants’ understanding of contemporary societies and their social phenomena at local and global levels. A special emphasis will be placed on a ‘Southern’ perspective with the objective of decolonising (in)visibilities in discourse studies.
The DiscourseNet Winter School brings together MA as well as PhD students across disciplines (social sciences, linguistics, cultural studies, humanities, etc.). Advanced BA students with their own research project are also welcome.

In a cooperation, the Institute for Linguistics and Literary Studies at the TU Darmstadt with its collaborative platform Discourse Lab, and the University Library ULB, are digitizing the holdings of the Darmstädter Tagblatt, one of the oldest periodicals and one of the longest continuously published (daily) newspapers in the German-speaking world.
